      • captain obvious Alan Wake was fun. I bought it two years ago when it came out for XBox 360. It was originally planned as an open world game. Later it was changed to what we have now. I also thought the interaction with the different characters and exploration aspect of the game were a bit limited. I would have hoped for something along the lines of Shenmue instead of being as action-oriented as it is.

Microsoft will upgrade its disc technology for its next Xbox from DVDs to Blu-Ray discs, catching up to rival Sony, games industry sources tell Kotaku.
      • captain obvious @Gelt: Even if you don't buy used games, then it would still not allow you to exchange games with friends. I personally don't buy used games myself in general. In the past few years, the only time I can remember buying one is when they didn't have the new one in stock anywhere at the time I started looking for it.

1 in 3 Gamers Turned Off By Online Abuse - Games Feature at IGN
      games.ign.com
Over 33 per cent of gamers who dislike playing shooters online cite bad behaviour by other players as their primary reason.
      • captain obvious I myself prefer a good single player experience or even a local multi-player game. I used to play online back in the day. These days, I don't have the free time to invest into it. Especially if I need to pay a fee to go online for a game. Though I the online abuse would also be a turn-off. Fortunately, I didn't run into much of that in the short time that I played online.

      • Xceptopec I agree with some of the sentiments in that article - most notably that online play (SPECIFICALLY with FPS's) is effectively wash rinse and repeat - even the mighty Bungie eventually succumbed to that one (and 343 carried on with it) with the release of Reach. At least in Halo 3 we could expect some slight variance every weekend, that never happened in Reach (and I doubt Halo 4 will see it return either). Online play almost never has the fun, variance or challenge of single player modes.

The foul-mouthed squeakers - let's just say if I could see my mute list, it would be almost entirely foul-mouthed, bigotted squeakers (and it would be one very bloody long list).

Elitists are perhaps the most annoying of the problem players online, they ruined Halo multiplayer, more than the abusive squeakers - in my experience, the worst of them came from MLG (I stand by my belief that MLG are largely to blame for ruining online play in Halo 3 and Reach). And they are as offensive over the headsets as the afore-mentioned squeakers. I've been thrown in matches with team-mates that are not that skilled, and I've either carried them, ot the team has lost - BUT it was a team game, hence a team effort, you win as a team or lose as a team, so be it - I end up on the losing team, no point chastising someone with less skill, at least they had a go, they tried. Encouragement works better than berating them.

I'll admit I'm no angel, but I restrict my verbal attacks to team-mates that show lack of regard or respect for the rest of the team - team-killers, kill-stealers, idlers, griefers etc. Any random profanity is an immediate reaction to the given situation, as a way of focusing and venting at that moment.

      • Matt the Gamer @Xceptopec: yup, some of the best team games are when the team isn't that great as individuals but with a good gameplan and execution it works out...miss the strategy in fps games as well. America's Army was pretty great when it first came out, but CoD just seems to satisfy the quick twitch junkie in me, versus the tactics

Everyone will have their own opinion on this matter but I truely believe that leaderboards and achievements/trophies are bad for gaming, especially multiplayer components.  Up until achievements became popular I used to have dozens of friends who... » View full blog post
      • Stephen I personanally think Achievements/Trophies are fun. To me, they add replay value. Because otherwise, I wouldn't go back and finish every single stage of Dynasty Warriors 6 on Chaos mode. Or...grind proficiencies to unlock Orochi X in Warriors Orochi 2. They give me extra things to do. So, to me, they add to gaming.

Now, leaderboards...I'm not a fan of them. And some of them just aren't fair. Such as, Ghost Recon...there's a dude that holds 6 places on the leaderboard. #1 - #6, I think. Has 6 Live accounts and grinds them out daily. So the achievement to get #1 on the leaderboard is no longer possible because of him. But this dislike of leaderboards goes back to...achievements/trophies. I wanted that achievement. =P

You mentioned boosting. Boosting doesn't bother me. I'd rather have a booster destroy his buddy over and over for an achievement rather than trying to destroy me hehe. Unless it's on Call of Duty. Boosting for kill streaks is stupid. Kill streaks are stupid anyways.

I don't care about K/D ratios. Or even W/L ratios. Leaderboards actually don't really affect me because I could care less. I actually play to have fun. Unlocking weapons feeds the collector inside me, so I find that fun also. If all weapons were unlocked out of the box with no level up system, I probably would never play a FPS online. To me, that is simply fun. Prestige...I don't care about. Once I have all of the weapons, I've achieved my own goal.

That brings me to another people. None of those really ruin gaming for me because I set my own goals. I'm not the best at FPSs. I do enjoy them sometimes, but I set my own goal. Such as...if I make you mad, I've won. =) Nothing like ending a match and have some kid screaming "FREAKING CAMPER!" ... yes, I camp. =P If you know I'm there, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out a way to kill me. XD And no, I'm not very good at "twitch kills". But anyways, I just make my own goals. My own achievements. It doesn't matter to anyone but myself. If I happen to do well on the leaderboards or something, then awesome. Even in World of Warcraft. I died a lot. But I also knew how to frustrate people, and that was my goal. Makes gaming a lot easier for me.

My brain is going in like 10 different directions. So forgive me for topic jumping. /rambleoff

      • captain obvious I don't take gamer score that seriously. I don't play games that competitively either. I can't remember the last time I checked a leaderboard for a game. It's nice to unlock an achievement. However, I don't obsess over it. So they certainly don't ruin it for me. Achievements, however add some replay value to a game.

      • Matt the Gamer they are fun, but they are starting to feel like a carrot dangling on a stick; only reason I catch myself playing certain games on Kongregate, to get that achievement, or like you said do certain things in CoD just for the points, but then again it also does open you up to things you would otherwise not have tried/attempted.
