The game was first revealed at Namco-Bandai's LevelUp event held in Dubai, UAE on May 11, 2011. It takes place seventeen years after the events of Soul Calibur IV, and features a new main character, Patroklos Alexandra, the son of Sophitia Alexandra, a major character in previous games. It was initially stated that Soul Calibur V's storyline branches from Siegfried Schtauffen's ending in Soul Calibur IV, but this was a mistake, as Siegfried's ending featured him using the power of the spirit sword Soul Calibur to crystallize all life on Earth, creating a "peaceful world" by removing life from it.
Regardless of where the story actually comes from, what is known is that in addition to being replaced as central protagonist, Siegfried is said to no longer wield Soul Calibur. More new characters are featured in the game, as well as ones returning from previous games.
As of E3 2011, Soul Calibur V was estimated to be "about fifteen percent complete." The build on display retained a number of Soul Calibur IV assets that will be removed as development progresses.
On October 20, it was revealed that Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series would be featured as guest character and that the game had a release date of January 31, 2012.
