Thatgamecompany's new game Journey has been out for about a week and a half. My friend keeps talking about it and it's all over the PSN store so it's hard to get away from it. I wasn't very impressed from what I saw, and I've never played the other games from Thatgamecompany. I know they're different, but that's about it. But, my friend was playing it and he wanted to try to get a trophy, and trophies are my thing. So I dropped the $15 on it. I didn't really know what to think of it, since it looked a little boring to play. But...I'll go through what my final thoughts were.
The biggest con for this game was the price versus game play. It's a 2 hour game if you don't hunt for trophies, and that's being generous. That's about $7 per hour. Pricy for a game. I expected to beat it, and not look back as well. But then again, I trophy hunt. So that adds time for me also. Either way, a short game...
When I began, it was sluggish. I didn't really know what to think. The controls felt a little clunky but I trudged on. I tried to play online with my friend, but it wouldn't work. You can't choose who you play online with. Randomly, people will just join you out of the blue. Which is a little weird. You can't communicate with them, you don't even know their PSN ID so you can't send messages. All you can do is hit a button to make a "bloop" sound. Unless you perfect morse code and they know what you're doing/understand it, you're out of luck. I ended up running into 10 people my first time through. Very random, but kind of neat. The controls get a little better as you collect symbols. They give you the ability to semi-fly as you get more. If you have a coordinated partner you can fly indefinitely, reacharging each other with the charged up version of the "bloop" sound I mentioned previously.
Right before the last stage, my friend and I gave up trying to play together. I like to make the "bloop" sound, and when I did it suddenly appeared on his
