WTF Star Trek?

Added 04:53pm May 24, 2009

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal

How can I be the only one that walked out of the new star trek movie thinking, "WTF?!"  Call me a fanboi (being used as a gender neutral term here...) but there were so many things wrong with that movie my head was spinning.  I assume that people who liked the movie did not actually watch Star Trek on television.

*------------------------SPOILER ALERT--------------------------------*

How does Kirk become a Cadet to Captain in ONE PROMOTION?

Hadn't Spock ever heard of the Temporal Prime Directive?  He just GIVES Scotty a formula that future-Scotty was supposed to invent?

Have any of these actors ever heard of Vulcans?  They're not supposed to show their emotions...  But they all DO.  Young-Spock can barely contain himself, and they have waaay too many mushy father-son moments.  The only Vulcan that acted like one was old-Spock.

It would be illogical for Spock as acting captain to leave the ship to rescue his family.  He's got his duty to attend to.  He's a Starfleet officer FFS!

Has the director heard of a little thing called sensors?  They have them in the Star Trek universe.  If several cadets get launched to the planet to destroy the giant drill, the Romulans should notice this.

Vulcans are supposed to be technologically superior to humans.  If a giant Romulan ship appears in their orbit and starts drilling into their planetary core, they should NOTICE this.  With their SENSORS.  It shouldn't take a ship filled with raggedy cadets to warn them of the imminent danger.

The fact that it's an alternate universe can't be used as an excuse for poor screenwriting.  If they're going to slap the Star Trek name on the movie, it should follow the rules of that genre.  Just like Bond movies, or comic book movies, or any kind of sequel to a previous movie, there are a set of internal rules that should be followed, and you are obligated to be somewhat consistent with events that happened in those

Progress - Little Braggage Never Hurts

Added 10:04pm May 11, 2008

Reading back on my old entries, I realize those entries don't show a clear picture of how I (and my guild) have progressed.  Kara is an old, tired zone, cleared in under 3 hours by people's alts, and we're running 3 Kara-clearing teams a week.  We've cleared ZA, Gruul's, Mag, and are 3/6 in SSC, 2/4 in TK, and first boss in Hyjal.  I've gotten (and then quickly geared out of) my T4 set.  I'm a class lead and a raid leader.  I'd run for officership but I'm going to wait until my husband's term is over so that there isn't a (perceived) conflict of interest.

Joining Calamitous Intent was definitely the best thing that ever happened to me in Wow.  I gained in many ways: friends, skill, proper group etiquette...  (Like a nub, I rolled on the first cloth epic that I saw drop, even though I was a healer rolling against DPS.  Luckily Match doesn't remember!  And now we're close friends.)  I'm proud of myself, and of the wonderful group of people that have become like family to me.

Vacation Weeks

Added 09:51pm May 11, 2008

Took two weeks of vacation.  I meant to spend time working, maybe building a firewall out an old PC, and maybe go to the library.  Not exactly ambitious plans, but I didn't get even those items done >.<  I got my mage to 70 on the second day, and ended up spending most of my time farming for my Spellfire set, and then running dungeons to get the rep for Heroic keys.

Actually, Blizzard's decision to change the Heroic requirement from Revered to Honoured is a bit flawed.  Now I'm keyed for heroic but I don't believe I have the gear.  My fire/arcane dmg bonus is at 840, and with my Arcane spec/rotation I normally kick out 700 DPS.  Not terrible but I'd probably be the lowest DPS in a heroic group, and I don't like the thought of being carried through.  (At the time of writing, I'm in crafted epics, spellstrike and spellfire, mostly blues, and two greens.)

I took a break from raid leading to focus on the mage.  Pretty tired of the priest, anyway.  There's not much more I can do from her, and my guild's progression into SSC/TK/MH can't be rushed.  So, for a time, upgrades are going to be few and far between.

BUT I LOVE the new sunwell badge rewards...  I bought all the stuff worth getting (new Gown of Spiritual Wonder, Adorned Supernal Legwraps  , and Gavel of Naaru Blessings)  I just need Anveena's Touch...  But it's such a small upgrade I'm totally tired of playing the priest.  There's a lot more room for improvement on the mage!

I am Raid Lead, hear me RAWR

Added 09:59am Feb 23, 2008

I was asked to start leading one of the weekly Kara raids.  Match thought that a feminine touch in the raid leads forum might cool the pissing contests down a bit.  I was a nervous wreck, but I don't think I showed it.  Except by the end I started getting a little frazzled.   I was so nervous I died in the first Prince enfeeble.  I have NEVER died in an enfeeble...

But I sounded confident, made calls when calls needed making, and generally moved the raid along.  I cracked jokes to make people feel at home (even though I was secretly a mess).  I HATE all that public speaking.  And it's a chance to prove that girls can lead, even if they can't TANK.  (My colead is a woman too, and we both play healers.  Chicks just heal and DPS, it seems.)

The raid is run with preference of Women (RL) > Mains > Alts > Initiates.  Even so, we only had 4/10 ladies in the run.  the next raid is Sunday.  Raid leading is so much work, I'm not sure what I signed myself up for.  It's a hassle just juggling 10 people together to form a raid, then having ppl beg off mid-raid because of sickness, family issues, whatever, it's a pain in the ass.

I'm sure my confidence and comfort will go up once I've done it a few more times.

ZulAman

Added 06:28pm Oct 25, 2007

I copied myself over to the public test realm along with a bunch of my guildmates for the purpose of testing out the new 10-man dungeon, Zul'Aman.

There were enough guildies that we only had to pug one spot.  It was a bit tough though; it's supposed to be a bit tougher than Kara.  And it was, we were unable to down the first boss.  The bleed effects KILLED the tanks.  Sometimes the taunts were resisted, and we'd wipe.

I'm looking forward to the changes in patch 2.3; priests get major love from the devs.  I get fear ward, and starshards is somewhat uberer, and with meditation increasing mana regen from 15% to 30%, my mp5 is SICK!!!  =D  Other improvements include a Power Word:Shield that scales with my healing bonus.  They didn't fix Lightwell though, it still sucks because it can be interrupted by damage.  How is that better than dps running away mid-battle to bandage?  (Vaguely useful for Prince fight *maybe*?)

Hope there's a free respec in it for me when the patch is released.

Kara Full Clear

Added 11:41am Oct 08, 2007

The title says it all.  YES, you may touch me.

After the Mass Guild Exodus of our group of elite players to another guild, we were struggling for a while.  The first half of Kara was on farm, and the second half was a complete mystery.  But we put together a new elite group, one with clearly stated gear guidelines rather than the old draconian hand-selected and exclusive group, and the guild jumped at the chance to shine.

Although it took us two nights (cleared up to Shade on the first night), by the end of night 2 we cleared everything, even Nightsbane.  The best part is, the Nightsbane kill was a guild first, no one in the old elite group had managed it before they scarpered.

The Netherspite fight was lots of fun!  It took us two tries.  I was able to eat the green beam for an entire phase; I have quite a lot of mana...  *flex*  Dronock DI-d me when it looked like we were about to wipe, so saved me a bit on my repair bill.  My death count for tonight was 5.

Prince fight went really long.  It was a 14 minute fight (or was it 9?)  I chugged 3 mana pots to get through the fight, and by the end all the healers were OOM.  I popped my Inner Focus at the end and was *just barely* keeping the tank up.  Whenever I regened enough mana he'd get a heal...  It was tight.

I originally told the guild I'd have to leave for work by 9pm (I work the night shift)  But with everything down except the Prince, well, I *had* to be there.  So I opted to cab to work so I could be there for the final moment.  It was SO worth it!  Prince was one-shotted.

I got the healer ring from Prince, so my blue-count is down to two.
